General information
Pyrazinamide is only used as a part of combination treatment with isoniazid and rifampicin to fight with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is not used for other medical goals. It is not effective against Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium leprae. To shorten the general duration of the treatment Pyrazinamide is used in the first two months.
Directions
Take the medicine exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop using it even if you feel well. It usually is taken once a day with or without food (at the same time each day) or in larger doses twice a week. Usually it is taken orally, 15 to 30 mg per kilo of weight.
Precautions
Before to take this medicine tell your doctor if you have gout, liver or kidney disease, diabetes, pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If during treatment you become pregnant, inform your doctor also. During treatment do not expose your body to sunlight, wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. This medicine may make your skin sensitive to sunlight.
Contraindications
Do not take this medicine if you have severe hepatic damage, hypersensitive to it or have acute gout.
Possible side effect
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); dark urine; decreased urination; fever; general feeling of being unwell; loss of appetite; nausea; pain or swelling in the joints; severe dizziness; stomach pain; trouble breathing; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; vomiting; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Drug interactions
Inform your doctor if you are hypersensitive to pyrazinamide, niacin, ethionamide (Trecator-SC), or any other drugs. Tell your doctor about all medications you take and especially about ethionamide (Trecator-SC), colchicine or probenecid (Col-Probenecid, Benemid), allopurinol (Zyloprim), and vitamins.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are not described. Pyrasinamide can cause abnormal liver function tests. If you suppose that you took too much of this medication, contact your doctor.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
